I’m sure most people reading this article already know what Geocaching is but for the few who don’t I will explain. Geocaching.com is the worlds largest treasure hunt. People hide different caches all around the world, and then leave a GPS co-ordinate and clues which allows other treasure hunters to find the geocaches.
To sum it up just watch this video…
It is a lot of fun for people of all ages. I wouldn’t expect to get rich finding geocache treasure but I have found some pretty cool stuff!
All you really need to have is a handheld GPS for geocaching, as well as a good pair of hiking boots. The better your GPS, the better chance you will find the cache your looking for. The reason I say this is because typically the higher end the GPS is, the closer it will be able to get you to your target location. Cheaper GPS’s can sometimes be 10 meters off or even higher. This margin of error will cause you lots of frustration and also a lot of digging around in the dirt to find what your looking for.
The most reliable mainstream GPS company in my opinion by far is Garmin. They have a wide range of handheld GPS’s to choose from, and they are all good quality. The price can sometimes be a little steep for some of the models Garmin offers but they are worth the money every time.
In my opinion the best GPS for geocaching at least from my experience is the Garmin GPSMAP.
Garmin GPSMAP
This GPS is everything you could ever want for geocaching. It also isn’t super expensive compared to most handheld GPS’s and most Garmin’s as well.
The GPS comes with worldwide basemap with TOPO 100K for all of the United States. It has so much detail for what you pay, the topography is very descriptive. It has a 3-axis tilt compensation electric compass, which allows you to see what direction your heading even if the device isn’t level. It’ll also tell you your precise altitude.
You can also share your way point to all of your friends wirelessly so everyone will know where you are and where you have been (you can turn this feature off).
If your interested in purchasing the GPSMAP, we recommend you get it from Amazon.com! They have the cheapest price we were able to find, and they also offer free shipping!
